Note #1: Obituary - Criswell. -- James W. Criswell was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, May 18, 1813, and depart this life in Graham county, Kansas, at the residence of this son, Robert Criswell, Feb. 21, 1891. Grandpa Criswell was one of our old settlers, having lived in the county more than a dozen years. The funeral sermon was preached by the writer, before a large concourse of his relatives and friends. Note #1: Cemetery at Curryville, Pike Co., Missouri
(Grave marker for Mrs. James W. Criswell) Elizabeth 4-3-1827 ---- 6-17-1905
We visited this cemetery on 10-7-1977 and found this grave marker in the family lot of J. D. (Jess) Criswell, her son. The lot is located in the center of the old cemetery.
To the best of our knowledge the James Criswell's had three children. Our grandfather, Robert M, 184 -1922: J. D., 1852-1940 (his wife, Virginia, 1858-1947), and one daughter, Mollie.
Mollie burned to death. She had no heirs. Her estate was divided between the children of Robert M who had died a short time before this, and her other [sic] brother, J. D. I remember going back to Mo. with the folks at that time. We visited Uncle Jess and Aunt Virginia -- real nice people.
There were nor Criswell's listed in the telephone directories when we were there. Have been unable to get a copy of Elizabeth's obit' as can not locate the old newspapers. The Library, etc. are not very helpful.

Note #2: Death of Mrs. Criswell.
Mrs. Criswell, mother of Jesse Criswell and Mrs. Ike Wilson, died Sunday at the home of her son, James Criswell, northeast of Vandalia. She was about 72 years old and was well known in Audrain and Pike counties. The remains were interred at Curryville Monday.
Mrs. Elizabeth Criswell was born in Columbiana county, Ohio April 8, 1827. In her early womanhood she moved to Missouri where the remainder of her long life was spent. She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church many years ago and has since lived a faithful, upright life. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. M. Aker at the residence, and the remains were interred at the cemetery at Curryville. Three children remain to mourn the death of a beloved mother; but they sorrow not as those who have no hope, for "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." We extend to these bereaved ones our deepest sympathy and pray that they may so shape their lives, by the example of her who has passed from among them to her reward, and of Him who died for our transgressions that they meet an unbroken family around the great white throne. Robert M. Criswell and Eliza Ann McKinney were born in eastern Ohio. They were married in 1865 and moved to Pike Co., Mo. The Criswell family came to Graham Co., Kans., by covered wagon, in early 1879. They filed for a homestead claim but in a few years moved to the homestead of his father, James W. Criswell, and other land joining it, where they lived for many years.
The Criswell's were of Scotch-Irish descent. There were many sad occasions in their pioneer life -- five of their then children died in early life. The children received the education offered at that time through the rural school system.
Bob Criswell and son, Charlie, worked a short time on the building of the railroad. They broke prairie-sod for farming, etc. They remembered severe blizzards and prairie fires too close for comfort and such, however they enjoyed their life in western Kansas and were proud to have been a part of the settlement of Graham County. .....johnf
Note #2: Obituary *** Criswell
Robert Milton Chriswell was born February 27th, 1843 in Columbiana township, Ohio, died at his home in Gettysburg township, Graham county, Kansas, March 17, 1922, at the age 79 years and 20 days. He was united in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony to Eliza Ann McKinney, May 25th, 1865. To this union were born ten children, four sons and six daughters, of whom all survive excepting two sons and two daughters, who had preceeded him to the grave. He is survived by a loving wife and life companion for the past 58 years, two sons, C. E. of Hill City and John of Penokee, Penokee, and four daughter, Mrs. Nora Funkhouser of Hill City, Mrs. Edna Whittelsay of Denver, Mrs. Mollie Allen of Hoxie, and Miss Grace Criswell of Salina and seven grand children and three great grand children.
In the demise of Mr. Criswell this community has lost one of her oldest pioneers, having settled upon a homestead near Hill City in 1879 upon which he lived up to the time of his death. Mr. Criswell was imbued with all the principles, energies and determinations, that it took to make a real pioneer; never discouraged, despondent, selfish or dissatisfied, but always cheepful [sic] and generous. No stranger was ever turned away from his doors, without a morsal [sic] to satisfy his hunger. He was self made, always true to God and man, himself and his beloved family. He was conscious to the last recognizing all of his beloved family and friends who had lent such a helping hand and comforting him in the hours of his late and final illness.

"The Robert M. Criswell family is closely connected with the history of the farmstead. Both Robert M. (born February 27, 1843) and his wife, Eliza Ann McKinney (born August 1, 1849) came from eastern Ohio and after their marriage in 1865 moved to Pike County, Missouri, thence to Graham County, Kansas in early 1879. In Kansas they filed for a homestead claim, but after the death of James the family moved to the father's homestead where they lived for many years on it and adjoining land. The family, of Scotch-Irish descent, had ten children, four born after they came to Kansas. They were: Charles (1867-1937); Nora (1869-1945); Hattie (1871-1893); Jessie (1873-1875); James (1876-1887); Lillie (1878-1896); Edna (1881-1966); John (1883-1969); Mollie (1885-1969); and Grace (1888-1922). For a short time, Robert and his oldest son, Charles, worked at building the railroad in Kansas. They also broke prairie sod and did other kinds of work. The education afforded the children was that offered through the rural school systems. The family took pride in having been a part of the early day settlement of Graham County but remembered trying times in severe blizzards and frightening prairie fires. Robert died March 17, 1922 and Eliza Ann on May 5, 1945. Eighty acres of the original homestead are still held by decendents [sic] of James W. Criswell. The farm has been owned by Robert and his wife, by John and Minnie Criswell, by Wayne and Twila Criswell, and by Freland and May (Criswell) Troxel. R. Wayne Criswell and May (Criswell) Troxel are great-grandchildren of James. Mr. Criswell and Mrs. Troxel supplied this information which they assembled from deeds and abstracts, from copies of the homestead file in the National Archives, and from family records. They suggest Janice G. Criswell, Grainfield, Kansas and Robert L. Criswell, Colorado Springs, Colorado, as resource persons for family information also. OBITUARY
Charles Edward Criswell, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Criswell, was born February 14, 1867 in Pike County, Missouri and departed this life in Hill City, September 19th, 1937, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and five days. He came to Graham county in the year of 1879 and has made this county his home from that time. Charley was always ready and willing to go out of his way to help a neighbor or friend. Thru good and bad years Charley stayed with his farm and never complained, whatever his lot might be. He was a kind and loving son and at the time of his death was living with and taking care of his aged mother who was 88 years old last month. Mr. Criswell was never married and devoted his entire attention to the welfare and comfort of his mother. Beside his mother, he is survived by one brother, John, of Hill City, and three sisters, Mrs. Nora Funkhouser, of Hill City, Mrs. Edna Finch, of Denver, and Mrs. Molly Allen, of Hoxie and other relatives and friends to all of whom his untimely and sudden death came as a severe shock. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Hill City, Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Tom Piper in charge and interment was hade in the Hill City cemetery.

Chas. Criswell Dies
Charley Criswell, aged 70 years, died Sunday, September 19. Mr. Criswell suffered a stroke of paralysis and fell from the wagon. The accident happened about 3 1/4 miles north of Hill City as he was returning to his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Hill City Christian Church and interment was made in the Hill City cemetery. The Rev. Tom Piper, of Norton, was in charge of the services.

OBITUARY Grace Criswell Smith was born Feb. 18, 1988, in Graham County, Kansas, and died Sept. 15th, 1922 at St. John's hospital, Hays, Kansas, aged 34 yrs, 6 months, and 28 days. The deceased grew to womanhood before there was a high school available, but acquired a common school education, and was one of the successful teachers of our county, having taught three terms in one district. She then turned her attention to the business world, clerking in a general store at Bogue, and was very efficient help. She then entered the Kansas Weslyan Business College of Salma, finishing a course there. She was married Sept. 2, 1922 to Alfred Smith of Salina, Kans. She leaves to mourn her untimely end her husband, mother, two brothers, three sisters and a host of friends. Short services were conducted at the home in Penokee and funeral services were held at the Federated church in Hill City by Rev. R. J. Wallace, assisted by Rev. Cunningham. Note #1: OBITUARY-VIRGINIA CRISWELL- 1947 (source unknown). MRS. J.D. CRISWELL PASSED AWAY. Mrs. J. D. Criswell, age 89 entered into final rest at her home east of Vandalia (Missouri) Monday after having been ill several months. She was a native of Pike County the daughter of the late Hudson and Margaret Kelly Gentry, pioneer settlers of Pike County. Her entire life has been spent in that historic county. Mrs. Criswell was a home loving lady and around her fireside was where she spent many happy days. In 1880 she and her husband after their marriage located on the farm on which both of them spent the most of their lives. To this union was born five children were born. She was a devout baptist and to this church, its tenets and teachings she was faithful. Her funeral will be held from the First Baptist Church in this city Thursday afternoon Rev. C. D. O'Neill, pastor afficiating. Interment will be in the Curryville Cemetery beside her husband who preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons, Reginald at home, John L. and Jess, Mrs. (Effie) Walter Mabry, Ralls Co., and Mrs' Roy Ferguson of S. Dakota and many friends. .....johnf

Note #1: Nora Funkhouser Dies. Was a Pioneer Business Woman of Hill City
Nora Funkhouser, 76, a pioneer Hill City business woman, died at a Halstead hospital Monday October 1, after an illness of several years.
Mrs. Funkhouser was in business in Hill City for 45 years. She was the owner and operator of the "Rex" hotel on Main street. She came to Graham county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Criswell, in 1879 when she was only ten years of age. Funeral services will be held this morning at Hill City funeral home at ten o'clock and interment will be in the Hill City cemetery. The obituary will appear in The Times next week. (see note #2)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN TO THE creditors, heirs, devisees, legatees and all others concerned, that on October 9th, 1945, the undersigned was, by the Probate Court of Graham County, Kansas, duly appointed and qualified as Administrator of the estate of Nora A. Fuunkhouser [sic], deceased, late of Graham County, Kansas.

Edna Rowley, 88, of Laramie, died Friday afternoon at Bethesda Care Center. She was born Oct. 3, 1889 in Beledista, Calif. and moved to Wyoming in 1922. She was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1936. Survivors include Mrs. Edna Funkhouse, two nieces and one nephew, all of Phoenix. Friends who wish may contribute to Bethesda Care Center. Stryker Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services are pending.

War Veteran Expires at 45 in U. S. Hospital; He Had Lived Here since 1922.
Funeral rites for Harry W. Rowley, Laramie resident, who died yesterday in Wadsworth, Kan., will be held at the Stryker mortuary tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Arthur L. Miller of the Union Presbyterian church will officiate, and burial will be made in Green Hill cemetery. Mr. Rowley, who was 45 years old, left the city April 1 to enter a U. S. veterans hospital at Wadsworth. Prior to his departure, he had been registered for medical treatment in the U. S. veterans hospital in Cheyenne. He died yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock. His wife, Edna, arrived this afternoon, accompanying the body. Only one other relative, Arthur, a brother, who lives in Kansas, survives. Mr. Rowley was born Dec. 10, 1890, in Cuba, Kan. He came to Laramie in 1922, after his military discharge from Company 20, air service mechanical repair division, with which he had served overseas. He was employed successively by the state highway department, the Swenson Lumber company and the University filling station. He was employed again by the Swenson firm immediately before he was stricken last January, and sent to the Cheyenne hospital. Mr. Rowley had been in poor health about eight months. His home here was at 610 Gibbon street.

PIONEER FAMILIES: CRISWELL and BONDY:
The Criswell and Bondy families lived on Homestead claims, within a distance of four miles, northwest of Hill City, Kansas. Their children did not attend the same rural schools but the families did know and enjoy the same good neighbors and friends. They endured many hardships but apparently enjoyed their lives here and were proud to be a part of the settling of Graham County.
We, of the fourth generation of Graham County residency, are very proud to still own a greater part of these properties that they struggled so hard to get.

160 a. -- our grandfather, Dominicus Bondy -- Homestead certificate #8208. Recorded June 1, 1886.

These Certificates were finalized through the land office in Kirwin, Kansas.

Note #2: CRISWELL. John Criswell, the youngest son of Robert M. and Eliza A. Criswell, was born in Graham Co., Kans., June 1, 1883. (N ½ of 23-7-23). [19 handwritten below first 23]
Minnie Paulina Bondy, the daughter of Dominicus and Nina E. Bondy, was born in Graham Co., Kans., Nov. 22, 1884. (NW 1/4 of 23-7-24).
John and Minnie were married in Hill City, Kansas, Dec. 23, 1903. Their two children: Robert Wayne - born in 1910: Lili May - born in 1914:
The Criswell's lived the first few years of their married life on rented farms until they were able to buy land which is now part of the Bud Wilson(?) property. In 1920, they sold this place and bought a home in Penokee as they were interested in a larger school system for their children. At the death of Minnie's father, Dominicus Bondy, they had bought the other half of the estate land from her sister, Nora Mitchem.
These years during and following W. W. I were fairly prosperous years. The family enjoyed living in Penokee. John worked for Clifford Egee in the Hardware Store and later at the Penokee Farmers Union elevator where Len Drailing was manager at that time. Minnie "boarded" the school teacher in their home. Penokee was a busy little place at this time and all was going well.
Then the crash came! Then the drought and dirt storms of the "dirty thirties" -- the big depression was on!!
The Criswell's moved to Hill City in 1933. John worked on the construction of the Highway south of the Hill City (283) and when that was completed, at any work that was available. Minnie rented light-houskeepi(ng) rooms of their home, to various fine people: and by the efforts of the entire family, they managed to squeak through those miserable years. The family did manage to keep their farmland, including the Bondy and Criswell homestead claims, and were able to retire the mortgages as conditions improved.
Eliza A. Criswell, John's mother, spent the last five years of her life in their home, where she died in 1943 at the age of nearly 94 yrs.
The main interests of John and Minnie were their children, to pay their just debts and "to live and let live". Their pet peeve was to hear "that damn wind blow".
Minnie Criswell was in failing health during the last years of her life. She passed away May 15, 1955 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Tommy and May Troxel.
John Criswell had suffered a broken leg with severe complications in early life and had become quite lame as he grew older. He passed away at the Trego-Lemke hospital in Wakeeney, Aug. 2, 1969.

John Criswell Passes Away. John Criswell, 86, Hill City, passed away Saturday, August 2, at the Trego-Lemke Hospital in WaKeeney. He was a retired farmer who spent most of his life in an around Hill City. Rev. Delbert L. Honn, pastor of the Hill City United Methodist Church, conducted the services at Spencer's Chapel in Hill City, Monday at 10:00 a. m. Burial was in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Hill City.

JOHN CRISWELL John Criswell, son of Robert Milton and Eliza Ann Criswell, was born June 1, 1883 on a Homestead northwest of Hill City and passed away August 2, 1969 at the Trego-Lemke Hospital, Wakeeney, Kansas. He lived his lifetime in Graham County.
He was united in marriage to Minnie Bondy on December 23, 1903. To this union were born two children, Wayne Criswell and May Troxel, both of Hill City, Kansas.
John was very proud of his family. He believed in dealing fairly and honestly with all people and tried to be a good neighbor to all. John was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers and five sisters. He leaves to mourn his passing his two children, one sister, Mrs. Mollie Allen of hill City, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Wayne Criswell; son-in-law Mrs. Freland Troxel, two grandchildren Janice and Robert Criswell, five nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted at the Spencer Chapel at ten o'clock, August 4, with Reverend Delbert Honn of the United Methodist Church of Hill City officiating. Mr. Randall Weller sand two selections accompanied by Bernadine Heupel, pianist. Interment was at Memorial Lawn Cemetery with the following friends as Casket-Bearers: Orville Clary, Clarence Triplett, Leon Super, Leo Robinson, Al Boucher and Earl Wood.

Note #3: OBITUARY. Mrs. Criswell Dies
Mrs. John Criswell, 70 died Sunday, May 15, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. May Troxel, in Hill City after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Tuesday afternoon, with interment in Memorial Lawn Addition to the Hill City Cemetery. Mrs. Criswell had made Graham County her home all of her life. She was born on the family homestead north of Penokee and this farm is still owned by the family. She was known as a good neighbor, a wonderful mother and home maker, and made many friends during her lifetime. Her husband was Hill City assessor for several years and her son, Wayne, served two terms as sheriff of Graham County. Survivors include her husband John Criswell, two children and their families, Mr. And Mrs. Freland Troxel, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Criswell, Janice and Robert, other relatives and friends.

Lillie May Criswell Troxel was born September 9, 1914 to John and Minnie Bondy Criswell in Graham County and passed away Monday, September 16, 1996, at the age of 82 yeas and seven days. May attended various school districts in Graham County and graduated from Hill City High School with the Class of 1932. In the fall of 1937, she moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where she met and married Freland Troxel on May 1, 1938. May was a homemaker and kept books for her husband's Auto Repair and Wheel Alignment Service. In 1964, May was employed by the Graham County Assessor's Office. She worked there until 1967, when she transferred to the Graham County Highway Department. She retired in 1976. May was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Wayne Criswell. She is survived by her husband, Freland Troxel; three nieces; three nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Jessie Duran, Aldine Crane, and Twila Criswell. Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday, September 19, 1996 at Memorial Lawn Cemetry [sic], Hill City, with David Williams officiating. Dear Mrs. Troxel:
The 1820-1830 Census only names the head of the household and how many males and females lived in the household. The 1850 is the first census that names all members of the household. So the 1820-1830 would only prove who lived in Jefferson County.
Enclosed is a copy of the 1850 Jefferson County, Ohio census for Steubenville - pg 70. I believe it is the right Wm McKinney. Elizabeth is listed a 1 yr. old. No Joseph Wertz (Wurtz) living in the household.
I am sorry but the K. H. S. library doesn't have the 1860 Jefferson Co., Ohio census. They are still buying them but haven't acquired the Ohio census as yet.
Have you tried getting census on interlibrary loan through you public library there in Hill City. Give them a call and ask if they have Interlibrary loan service.
Yes, we do have Colombiana Co, Ohio census. If you want me to Catlin-Knox Shoe Co. it be sure and send the town or township of birth. It is very time consuming to search a whole county for a surname.
Did the Criswells die in Hill City? Do you have (unreadable) if you need obits. They sometimes contain lots of information. If you want them, please send day, month, year and place of death.
Do you know when the Criswells lived in Graham County? When did they move there and where? What time period? These are facts I need to find them in Graham County census, if you need the census. Ks has census from 1855 - 1925. It was Always taken on the 5 year in Ks. The Federal Census on the ) year. There is no 1890 Federal Census and the 1900 hasn't been released by Congress, as yet.

My stepmother gave me your letter to answer. I don't know whether we are related or not -- am sorry to say, I don't have very far back on the Criswells. Do know that our line of Criswells came to Bloomfield -- Calloway County -- Missouri from Virginia. Frank John Criswell (my great grandfather) was killed in a Flour Mill accident in Fulton, Mo in 1879. I presume he had brothers and sisters; but I have no record of them. Mrs. R. G. "Mollie" Allen of Hill City, on January 16, became a great grandmother for the twenty-third time, equalizing the number of her great grandchildren and her grandchildren. She has four children, two daughters and two sons. Mrs. Clarence Foster, Lenora, is the mother of 15 children, while her other daughter, Mrs. Ila Crouse of Denver has one son. One son, Victor of Hill City, is the father of one daughter and one son, while her youngest son Robert L. of Denver, is the father of five children. That is the breakdown on the 23 grandchildren. Twenty of the great grandchildren are the sons and daughters of the eight married children of Mrs. Foster; and the other three are the sons and one daughter of Mrs. Crouses's son, David of Pensecola, Florida. Breaking it down even further, Mollie has 11 grandsons and 12 granddaughters; and 15 great grandsons and 8 great granddaughters. There are still fourteen single grandchildren, so Mollie should be a great grandmother many more times.

Mrs. Glen Harper played the piano. Burial was at the South Star Cemetery. The grandson, Lawrence, Robert, Floyd, Howard, Clarence and Vernon Foster were pallbearers and Lyle Foster was an honorary pallbearer.

Funkhouser Family Die In Home Fire. Fire Last Tuesday Night Results In Death of Three.
The deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Funkhouser and their twelve year old son Roy, resulted from a fire Tuesday night around eight o'clock in their home in Lexington, Nebr. It was thought that perhaps the oil cook stove had exploded. The house was damaged mainly in the kitchen. Mrs. Funkhouser suffered few burns and her death thought to be due to a heart attack and suffocation. Roy was badly burned. Both died Tuesday night. Mr. Funkhouser who was badly burned, but had managed to get out of the house, died Saturday.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Funkhouser and her son, Roy, Friday afternoon at Lexington, Nebr. Burial was in the Pleasantview cemetery at Logan. Funeral services for Mr. Funkhouser were held Tuesday in Lexington with burial in the Pleasantview cemetery at Logan.
The Funkhouser's were former residents of Logan. They lived in Logan for a number of years at the residence which is now the Fred McClellan home. Mrs. Funkhouser is the former, Eunice Suhr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Suhr at Phillipsburg, and sister of Sumner Suhr of Logan. She also leaves to mourn her death, three other brothers, Gilbert of Kensington, Theodore of Stockton, Lester of Denver, and a sister, Gladys Tyner of Los Mollines, Calif. .....johnf

OBITUARY - Robert Elige Funkhowser, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Funkhowser was born near Logan, Kansas, June 20, 1929, and departed from this life September 23, 1929, at the age of 3 months and 3 days. He never was very well, but the last few day he became much worse. All that loving hands and medical aid could do was done for the baby, but the heavenly Father thought best to call him home.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his parents, grandparents, one great-grandmother, a number of uncles and aunts, besides a number of other relatives and friends.
So thick in every graveyard
These little hillocks lie,
But every hillock represents
An angel in the sky.
He was laid to rest in the Logan cemetery.

Wayne Criswell, the son of John and Minnie (Bondy) Criswell, was born in Graham County, Kans. on April 1, 1910. He was educated in the Graham Co. school system and completed high school in Hill City in 1928. During the "dirty thirties" he worked for Fred Miles at the pool-hall and grain elevator and was serving as Undersheriff when he entered the Armed Forces during W. W. II: was stationed in the Aleutian Island and Alaska area: received his discharge in the fall of 1945 and returned to Graham County.
Wayne was elected Graham Co. sheriff in 1946 and 1948. After his two terms in office he served as the Graham County Republican Chairman for a number of years, also worked with other committee's, lodges, etc.. He is still very interested in the government and well-being of his country. In 1951 he began work as clerk at the Hill City Sale Barn and worked there until 1971, aw well as clerking farm sales, auctions, etc: however, his main interest has been in farming and cattle.
Wayne Criswell and Twila Acheson were married in June, 1946. Twila, who was born in Graham Co., has been an employee of Farmers and Merchants Bank for many years. They have two children: Janice, born in 1947 and Robert, born in 1949. Janice and Robert have both earned their college degrees. Janice is a high school English teacher and Librarian. Robert, who lives in Colorado Springs, Colo., is working in Insurance.
The Criswell's are very proud parents; interested in their community; well known and respected people.

Note #2: WAYNE CRISWELL. Robert Wayne Criswell, son of John and Minnie (Bondy) Criswell, was born April 1, 1910, and departed this life May 21, 1983, at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 20 days. He grew to manhood in Graham County and completed high school in 1928. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. In June of 1946, he married Twila Acheson. To this union, two children, Janice and Roberts, were born. After serving as an undersheriff, Wayne was sheriff of Graham County from 1946 to 1950. He served as Chairman for the Graham County Republican Party for a number of years. In 1951, Wayne began clerking at the Hill City Sale Barn and continued there until July of 1971. During this time he also clerked for Legere Auction and Realty and the Plainville Sale Barn. His familiarity with local and area people made clerking easy and enjoyable work for him. In addition to these part time jobs, Wayne continued his farming and cattle operation north of Penokee on land which has belonged to his family for four (4) generations. Wayne served on the Farmers and Merchants Bank Advisory Board from 1971 to 1974. He was a member of V.F. W. Post #8957, the Hill City American Legion and Millbrook Lodge #281. Since his retirement as a farmer-stockman, "Cris", as he was know, joined his friends drinking coffee and playing cards. During the past year and a half, Wayne greatly enjoyed his grandson, Jess Robert, whom he described as "quite a boy."
Surviving are his wife, Twila; a daughter Janice of Grainfield; a son, Robert L. and his wife, Janice; one grandson, Jess of Hays; his sister, May, and brother-in-law, Tommy Troxel.

She died in a rest home at Belleville, where she had been a patient for about a month. Prior to that she has been at Kansas City for about five months under medical treatment. Note #1: Obituary. January 1966. Clarence A. Foster of Lenora dies. Clarence Alfred Foster, 72, of Lenora, died Sunday at the Veterans' Hospital at Grand Island. Mr. Foster had resided at Lenora since 1948. He had been in failing health for several years. Cutting - Eckhart Funeral Home of Lenora announced funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p. m., at the Church of God in Lenora with The Rev. Clayton Shriver officiating. Burial will be at the Lenora South Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, the former Lea E. Allen of the home in Lenora, and by eight sons and seven daughters. Four of the sons live at Lenora. They are Lyle, Lawrence, Vernon and Howard. The other sons are Robert of Electra, Texas, Gordon of Lake Oswego, Ore., Floyd of Overland Park and Clarence Jr. of Kansas City, Kans. Two of the daughters live at Lenora. They are Dorothy and Gloria. The other daughters are Mrs. Thelma Beagley of Wichita, Mrs. Eleanor Esslinger of Belleville, Mrs. Erma Allison of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mrs. Helen Viens of Hill City and Miss Marilyn Foster of Belleville. Also surviving is a brother, Floyd, of Craig, Colo., a half-brother, Glenn Spillman, of Hutchison, and 25 grandchildren. He was predeceased by one half-brother, two sisters, his father, his mother and his step-father.
Mr. Foster was born July 23, 1893, at Adell, Kans., the son of Aaron D. and Margaret Ann Foster. He grew to manhood on a farm in Sheridan County, and attended Sheridan County schools. He was married, July 21, 1928, at Smith Center to Lea E. Allen. They lived at Hoxie for many years and he was a water well driller there. They moved to a farm in Graham County near Lenora in 1944, and to Lenora in 1948. He retired in 1958. Son of Clarence Alfred and Lea Elda (ALLEN) Foster.
HILL CITY - Lyle A. Foster, 66, Hill City, died Tuesday, April 2, 1996, at Graham County Hospital.
Mr. Foster was born April 9,1929, at Hoxie and was a lifelong resident of the Hill City area. He was a domestic water and irrigation well driller; worked on road and bridge construction; oil fields; and at Great Western Sugar Factory and Graham County Road Department. He was a member of Lenora Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Survivors include his wife, Rosalie A. of Hill City; six sons, Edward Lee of Hill City, Dale Eugene, David Wayne and John Alan, all of Leavenworth, Ronald Dean of Inman and James Darwin of Lindsborg; a daughter, Jackie Jo Bond of Liberal; seven brothers, Lawrence of Lenora, Robert of Plainville, Gordon of Newberg, Ore., Vernon of Topeka, Floyd of Olathe, Howard of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Clarence of Gardner; seven sisters, Thelma Beagley of Kansas City, Mo., Erma Allison of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Helen Bivens of Laporte, Colo., Eleanor Esslinger of Beloit, Dorothy Vaughn of Kansas City, KS., Gloria Schmitten of Gladstone, Mo., and Marilyn Miles of Vancouver, Wash.; Sixteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Terry C. Miles, 58, died Nov. 4, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson. He was born June 17, 1944, at Belleville, the son of Charles Gerald and Mona Irene Logan Miles. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, he was a retired construction worker and carpenter.
He belonged to Bible Baptist Church, Hutchinson.
Survivors include: two sons, Terry A. and Charles A., both of Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Renee Miles, Spokane, Wash.; his mother, Belleville; a sister, Mary Lou Wood, Topeka; and companion, Red Baker, Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Rodney.
Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bible Baptist Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Mike Simmons presiding.
