From Seedlings of William Foster by Flavius Foster.

MILTON SMITH, 9th child of AARON & SARAH FOSTER, was born in McLean Co., Illinois, and came to Kansas with his parents. Milton S. grew to manhood in the Circleville, Ks. Area, where he met and married MARY JANE BROWN. The two children in the family list were born and died in Circleville. Their children, Aaron B. and Silas N. were born on the farm south of Haddam, Kansas.

During the Civil War Milton S. served with Co. A, 5th Kansas Cavalry and was in the battle of the Little Blue, near Independence, Missouri. While pursuing the fleeing Rebel forces, Milton S. was taken prisoner. He was interned in the infamous Tyler, Texas prison. The contaminated water and hog-slop type food served the prisoners caused a stomach ailment that finally caused Milton S. death. A family story tells of hunger so desperate, the prisoners caught and ate many of the rats that infested their encampment-prison.

(End of pg. 191) in 1868, Milton S. took his family to Washington County, taking up land on Mulberry Creek 2 ½ miles south of Haddam, Kansas. Her he farmed till his death, at which time his wife took over, and ran the farm. Milton S's wife, Mary Jane, ran the farm till 1878, at which time she joined her nice and nephew in a move to the old Solomon River settlement.

Mary Jane was one of the three sisters: -- MARGARET ANN, who married Madison Cox, pg. 129 - and SARAH who married Melville Davis' brother, pg. 159. When Mary Jane took her young sons to the Solomon River settlement, she took up a homestead. Despite Indian scars drought and crop-consuming grasshopper plagues, Mary Jane ran her new farm, providing a living for her family, till the boys were grown. Aunt Mary Jane was always spoken of with great respect by all that knew her.

Mary Jane returned to Haddam, Kansas in later life, and stayed with sister and brother-in-law, Madison & Margaret Cox, till her death. Milton S. and Mary J. Foster are both buried in the before mentioned cemetery 3 miles south of Haddam, Kansas.

Note #2: Reguarding Adell, Kansas.    HOME TOWN HEART BEAT  - Cappers Weekly , May 28, 1968

"Silent City" - Adell - We are a pioneer cemetery located in Adell Township, Sheridan County, Kansas. There are many early day silent cities neglected or unknown now, but we here are well remembered.    We do not know the exact number of our inhabitants  "at rest"  on a grassy hillside facing eastward.  For in which no man knoweth, as lightning cometh from the east even unto the west, so shall the coming of Jesus be.  Each of us have our designated lot and all have our-markers,  some wonderfully designed marble or granite, a few in lowly blocks  of cement.  Our silent city was founded in the 1870s. In locating and developing the many homesteads surrounded, there were many

grandparents, parents, children, and old uncles and aunts, some men Civil War veterans. They all came by wagon train with oxen horses and mules; some in horseback. Our first inhabitants were the mothers and babies, then the aged. One early one by accident, a boy who drowned under a load of hay crossing the North Fork Solomon River at "Devil's Gulch", a half mile west of our city.   Our population increased rapidly for several years and even unto this day occasionally another joins us here. Surrounding us is a

nice useful fence with needful gate, low cement walls.  No buildings are in sight of our city but north eastward ,is the Adell Oil field which would have surprised the pioneers who sleep here.   On Memorial Day we are remembered for we are fortunate and grateful in having a final home for some veterans which rate the "American Legion" with a short service and a final salute to their comrades and others sleeping here.  but we are  that day  and shineth Here on this sunny hillside, we await the duration.

C. F. Davis---- A Prominent rancher and fruit-grower of Yuba County, C. F. Born near Haddam, Washington County Kansas on February 23 1873, he is the eldest of five children surviving their parents. W.H. Davis and Sarah E (Brown) Davis, natives of Iowa and Kansas, respectively. C. F. Davis was reared on a farm in Kansas, and there learned the rudiments of soil cultivation. He left home at the age of twenty, and in 1893 was married to Miss Iona Gregory.  She was born in Hemple, Mo., and was the second child of the late James .M and Amanda (Hudgins) Gregory, both natives of that State, who settled in California in 1895.

In 1896 C.F. Davis homestead in Custer County Okla. For twenty-five years he has been an extensive farmer, at present still owns 320 acres of land. In 1896 and 1896 he spent a year in Yolo County, California. In 1917 he brought his family to California locating in Yuba County.  Since then he has made three trips back to Oklahoma to attend to his interests there. At the same time, he has been carrying on much development work in Yuba County, near Marysville, his sons being associated with him in the work of clearing, leveling and planting bottom lands: they are at present engaged in developing orchards, having recently set out over sixty acres to peach trees and fifteen acres to cherries and prunes, which have shown the phenomenal growth characteristic of this section of the Golden State. Both Mr. Davis and his sons cultivate the land with the true understanding of its real possibilities, and at the same time enrich the soil for future generations.

Nine children blessed the union of Mr. and Mrs. Davis, Lloyd L is associated with his father: he married Grace Hampton, and has two children. Dorothy and Evelyn June.  Roy E. is a rancher: he married Mary Sliger, and is the father of one daughter Sybil.  Arthur M. is also a rancher: He married Marie Shingle, and have one son Calvin.  Edith E. is the wife Harvey Lolmaugh and the mother of one daughter, Marie.  Gladys M. Notes for CHARLES WALTER JOHNSON:

-Submitted by Gary Lee Johnson, Hoxie, Kansas. `My father died in 1956 when I was 15 years old.

He had lifted a 100 lb sack of sugar at work and busted a couple of ribs.

While at home a blood clot got to his heart and he died. Grand Pa was with him when it happened.

Today Dad would have survived, but then there was a lot less knowlege about blood clotting. He

died to soon in his life, way before I was through with him. At 15 your just

starting to learn about life, from that point on I was learning on my own. I

must say that I did not really miss him until I was much older and had children

of my own. I have since learned how him not being there left a wide hole in my

ability to deal with my own family. I have so much that I would love to ask

him. Im sure I could keep him busy, I'v found out how much love I'v missed.

Notes for BABY BOY JOHNSON:

This baby is buried in Seibert Cemetery in between 2 cousins that died that same

period. Uncle Grant put small head stones there after they were buried some

years later.   Seibert cemetery is in the small farming town of  Seibert

Colorado. The sod house he was born in has been reclaimed by the elements. My

older brother Charles was also born in this same one room "Soddy". My Maternal

Grandparents lived one mile north on the east side of the road, this house was

still standing in 1986, although abandoned.  Charles and I reminisced as we

strolled through our memories together. The Aumillers have kept the families

together by having these reunions as often as ever other year where our roots

are so very deep!....Gary Lee Johnson

was divorced from Dorothy- 6 Jul 1972,   Zola- 7 Sep 1978,   Ruth in 1986. His

real love was always Dorothy. Eph was a real love of a man, very active and

all smiles, he never met a stranger. Eph had a real keen mind, until his last

heart attack, he then whined alot. His heart just wore out. He had a very good

singing voice and played the banjo and guitar, we have a recording of him

singing and talking about himself. He also composed music. Before he died he

moved back to Lompoc, Ca. to be around Dorothy and his only child, Gloria and

her sweet family. Eph's passing leaves a large space no can fill.
